January 31 kicked off the first Innovation Cafe for 2013 with guest speaker, Alon Hillel-Tuch. Alon is the CFO and Co-founder of Rockethub, Inc. one of the nation’s largest crowdfunding platforms. Crowdfunding (think Facebook for fundraising) can be described as collective, online fundraising by a network of individuals to support research and ideas for companies. Crowdfunding platforms are raising funds and gaining momentum with entrepreneurs, artists and academics. The platforms are also getting the attention from policy makers in the United States as it reinvents how capital is raised.
Elisabeth Whyte, a professor at Penn State University Park also shared her experience with crowdfunding as a tool to support autism research.
