October 22 marked the third annual Penn State Hershey Innovation Awards. Faculty, staff, students, partner organizations and the community gathered to celebrate the spirit of innovation.
The Innovation Awards recognize members of the Penn State Hershey community whose ideas moved forward through execution of a license agreement, starting a company or earning a patent based on Penn State technology between July 1, 2012 and June 30, 2013. The award ceremony began in 2011 to raise awareness of the innovation and commercialization activity at the College of Medicine and Milton S. Hershey Medical Center.
A dinner was held at the Penn State Hershey University Conference Center follow by a keynote address by Glenn Prestwich, presidential professor of medicinal chemistry and special assistant for faculty entrepreneurism at the University of Utah. As the co-founder of eight companies, Dr. Prestwich shared the common challenges researchers face during the commercialization process but stressed the importance of translational research.
Following the keynote address, awards were presented by Drs. Daniel Notterman and Keith Marmer along with respective department chairs. The Office of Technology Development recognized thirty individuals for their achievement during this event.

The culmination of the event was the presentation of three awards for outstanding achievements in innovation; the Student Award for Excellence in Innovation give to Scott Jones, Ph.D., Microbiology and Immunology; Investigator to Watch given to Alaa Awad, M.D., Cellular and Molecular Physiology and the Innovator of the Year Award given to Joseph Sassani, M.D., Ophthalmology.
